4 Early Warning Signs of Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is a serious degenerative disease that primarily impacts the brain and spinal cord. However, the underlying cause of these symptoms stems from someone’s own immune system. The immune system of someone who suffers from multiple sclerosis will begin to attack something known as the myelin sheath. This sheath protects people’s nervous system and helps it function.
As the myelin suffers attacks from one’s immune system the following symptoms of multiple sclerosis may escalate in severity

1. Vision problems
Multiple sclerosis symptoms gradually develop over the course of the condition. As such it’s important to keep an eye out for early signs of multiple sclerosis. Often times the treatment options are more successful when symptoms are caught fairly early. Additionally, early detection can vastly improve results with treatments such as an aubagio teriflunomide immunomodulator with anti-inflammatory properties. Vision problems are one of the most common early warnings signs of multiple sclerosis. Vision is highly tied into the human nervous system. As such, it doesn’t take much to impair our ability to see the world. This can make visual problems an important early warning sign of multiple sclerosis. However, there is one significant issue with using visual problems as a way to detect multiple sclerosis. And this is the fact that our vision can be impaired for a wide range of reasons. All of this highlights the importance of regular visits to an optometrist. An optometrist will be able to differentiate visual problems stemming from the eye from those coming from damage to the central nervous system. This is something that even the people suffering from eye problems won’t be able to do on their own

2. Tingling and pain and numbness
The nerves in our central nervous system are responsible for most of our sensations of pain and pleasure. As such, we can often notice damage to the central nervous system through what amounts to a disruption of our sense of normality. When removed from outside stimuli we’re not typically experiencing either pleasure or pain. We will instead feel a more neural state which doesn’t have any sensory component. This can change with even minor damage to the central nervous system. Tinging, pain and numbness are one of the more common signs of damage to the central nervous system. All of these symptoms are the end result of signals essentially getting crossed within the body’s internal communication system. The tingling feeling is somewhat analogous to what one hears when trying to tune in a weak radio signal. Numbness comes about when the central nervous system isn’t properly transmitting signals from some parts of the body. This is similar to the white noise heard on a radio which isn’t properly receiving a signal. And pain is of course quite normal as a warning sign of something going wrong anywhere in the body

3. Pains and spasms
Painful spasms are another common symptom of multiple sclerosis. And with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis people will often see a continual escalation of symptoms. The pain and spasms tend to be centered in specific muscle groups. If you suddenly find that your legs or back experience pain or spasms without any exercise it’s important to have it looked at by a doctor

4. Bladder issues
In addition to the main three warning signs it’s also important to note issues with one’s bowel and bladder. Not everyone with multiple sclerosis experiences these types of problems. However, about 80% of people suffering from the disorder will eventually find that they have issues related to relieving themselves. This won’t typically be among the first issues someone experiences with multiple sclerosis. However, it’s still important to talk to a doctor if these symptoms suddenly appear
