Early Warning Signs of Prostate Cancer
Symptoms of prostate cancer are not evident in the early stages; they only become prominent in the advanced stages of the disease. Therefore, routine screenings are essential in the early stages to diagnose if one has prostate cancer. However, depending on the size of the tumor and its effect on the prostate gland and urethra, a few symptoms may appear early. It’s essential to consult a doctor if these symptoms emerge. Read on to know about the early signs and symptoms of prostate cancer.
- Urinary problems
The prostate gland lies close to the bladder and urethra, and prostate cancer can cause different urinary symptoms. One might find it difficult to urinate without pain, loose bladder control, or feel a burning sensation while passing urine. Furthermore, the condition of hematuria, presence of blood in the urine, might also occur. All these urinary symptoms can develop in the early stages and might be warning signs of prostate cancer.
- Blood in semen
If the tumor in the prostate gland grows large enough, it can put pressure on nearby blood vessels and glands. This can make them irritable and cause hematospermia, where blood is found in the semen. If it occurs, contact your doctor at the earliest. A digital rectal exam or a prostate specific androgen (PSA) test might be ordered to diagnose if this condition is linked to prostate cancer.
- Pain and swelling
Prostate cancer can cause pain in the nearby region and make the bones near the prostate glands stiff, causing the upper thighs and lower back pain. Swelling may appear in the lower limbs, and some may experience a paralysis as well. Over time, the pain may increase from a dull ache to a stabbing sensation. A bone scan can usually detect if the bones are affected due to cancer. Pain and swelling are symptoms of advanced prostate cancer.
- Weight loss
Prostate cancer can cause one to lose weight; for instance, losing weight without much physical activity or changes in diet can be a warning symptom for prostate cancer. This is especially true, if it occurs along with the above symptoms. In some cases, people lose appetite altogether and can be a sign that cancer has spread to other organs of the body, such as the liver.
- Fatigue
Prostate cancer can block the tubes that take the urine from the kidneys to the bladder, causing fatigue and tiredness. When kidneys function poorly, it can make the body feel tired and drained. Fatigue makes it tough to carry on day to day activities and can also affect one’s mood. One may even feel like no amount of rest is able to restore their energy. This symptom is extremely common in those who have advanced prostate cancer.
